Three men, one world drivers’ championship. Wondering what the heck I’m talking about? I’m talking about one of the fastest growing sports in the world, Formula 1. Currently in the lead is McLaren driver Lando Norris from the UK. He’s been with the team for six years and just got his maiden win last year.
Second is the stone-cold Aussie, Oscar Piastri. He replaced home favorite Daniel Ricciardo in 2023 and has been on the hunt for his first drivers’ championship ever since.
And not far behind them is reigning world champion Max Verstappen, looking to win another title. The Dutchman is very keen on winning another WDC and keeping his long streak of wins going.
The title fight has been going on all season, but I believe that it really got heated up this past weekend in Brazil. Piastri, who had been leading the championship for the last couple of months, crashed in the sprint (which is like a mini race). This left Norris to gain the title lead and Piastri to get pushed back. Norris then went on to win the race, while Piastri got fifth. This furthered the Brit’s lead and now he has 3 more races to solidify the title.
Now you may be asking, why should I care about a bunch of European men racing around in circle? First, it’s not circles and just European men! Second, this could be monumental for F1. If Lando wins like I suspect he will, then Max Verstappen’s 4 year winning streak will be over and the era of the ‘Dutch National Anthem’ will be over as well. Don’t discredit the Dutchman though, he is slowly creeping up into the top 2.
I encourage all sports fans, no matter what you’re a fan of, to at least watch the finale in Abu Dhabi, as it is always jampacked with action and interesting overtakes. Even if you don’t care about a single thing I’m saying, I still think you should watch it.
