Books of Blood Vol. 1-6 by Clive Barker (published 1984-1985)
Clive Barker’s debut short-story collection is a wonderful and gripping bunch of stories that run the gamut of pretty much evert horror genre out there. From gothic tales of mystery and suspense to psychological thrillers to otherworldly Lovecraftian tales, everything is represented here. The quality of writing varies throughout, but it is maintained on a level above most of his contemporaries. Barker’s unique combination of high-brow writing with outright references to depravity and shocking delights makes for interesting reading.
This collection is sure to please any fans of Stephen King (a known admirer of Barker’s works) as well as fans of horror in general. Really, anything you could want is in this group of stories. Zombies, vampires, aliens, unexplained horrors, an orangutan (?), the plague, serial killers, etc. These short stories are a dense and detailed representation of the horror scene in the mid to late 80s and are sure to please.
One major highlight of the collection for me is In the Hills, the Cities. This terrifying tale plays on mass hysteria on gigantic proportions. A titan made from the bodies of the dead, slowly lumbering towards a destination that will never come. Even if you don’t enjoy horror, I think everyone will enjoy this story. Its brilliant and truly terrifying and is a major highlight of Barker’s career.
All in all, give this collection a shot. Clive Barker is an exceptional writer and his debut work is not an exception to that.
