What is tradition? The first thing you may have thought of was Christmas (and the German pickle hidden in the tree) or dresses with aprons cooking over a hearth sheltering themselves from the oncoming winter freeze. But tradition can mean all sorts of things. Many people in America know the tradition of pizza on Friday, or movie night on Saturday. We all have our own daily routines that set us up for the day.
So, what are the traditions here at CB West? And how do they impact the culture within the school?
It’s fall, the wind slices the trees sending the wilting leaves to the decomposing ground, and yet all everyone is thinking about is what they are going to wear and who they are going with. What is the theme? Sophomore class hasn’t chosen yet, but nobody is deterred. Everyone is planning and preparing for one of the many traditions here at West, Homecoming. An event that brings the whole school together every year without fail. The memories made and the people you go with all remain with you for the rest of the year, setting off the autumn in positivity and togetherness.
Football brings everyone together as well. A commonality that occurs every Friday as long as the season lasts. Droves of students and family along with arbitrary observers all congregate to watch a weirdly shaped object fly through the air. This bizarre tradition brings most of West, and a lot of the community surrounding West, together. That is why traditions are so popular, they are a powerful tool for togetherness.
Whether we are all joining to wear specific outfits for spirit weeks or getting decked out in gold or pink for football games, we do these activities together every year because they mean something. They mean having fun and supporting friends. They mean joint memories and shared enthusiasm.
So, what traditions will you be celebrating together this year here at CB West?
