“Minecraft: The Movie” – Blockbuster or Blockhead?
By: Sophia Rasnake
We waited 16 years for a Minecraft movie. Right, the one where you spend hours punching trees and running from dangerous beasts. Was it what I expected? No. It was not. I went in expecting a train wreck and came out… actually kind of impressed? The movie has earned itself over $900 million globally because of the hype surrounding it. The characters are endearingly clueless, and their solutions to problems are often as absurd as they are ingenious – think Indiana Jones, but with more cobblestone. The movie nails the quirky humor of the game, with plenty of nods to crafting fails and the eternal struggle against gravity. It was geared toward children younger than 12, but the nostalgia was incredible for someone who grew up playing the game.
Visually, it’s like stepping into a Minecraft dream. I think some were expecting a darker approach with some fantasy involved. The landscapes are stunning, and the creatures are both cute and terrifying, but it was a bit disappointing to see the animation- it was a little uncanny to watch, not quite human, but just realistic enough to terrify you.
Whether you’re a die-hard Minecrafter or just someone who likes a good laugh, this movie is worth a watch. Just don’t be surprised if you leave the theater craving a pickaxe and a few stacks of wood. Our final verdict: surprisingly not that much of a blockhead. Go see it and embrace your inner builder.
