The Buzz About Volleyball
By: Dylan Weiler
Men’s volleyball is an upcoming sport throughout the recent generation of students in Central Bucks West high school. With mainstream sports like basketball and football being all the talk for years on end, it is interesting to hear something new come through the grapevine of sports talk here at West. So, within the past year, I decided to attend a few games to really see what all this newfound hype was about.
The game of volleyball is a self-explanatory sport, get the ball over the net and keep it in the air using a series of specific moves called volleys, and whoever’s side of the floor the ball touches first the opposing team gets a point. However, the game gets more interesting when you add the ability to make plays and strategically put different people in different places on the floor based on size and skill level. All of the sudden, the game isn’t so simple anymore, each player has a different role to play. Some are in the front trying to spike the ball downward so fast that the opposing team would have to have the reaction time of a cheetah just to save it. While others stay in the back, making sure that if the ball makes its way back there, it has no chance of ever touching the ground. The amount of teamwork and communication from each teammate in the so little amount of time they must keep the ball in play, is what really fascinates me about this game.
Not only does teamwork pique my interest when watching, but so does the atmosphere. I played basketball for years, in house leagues, travel, and Aau teams. Not once have I ever seen such an enthusiastic and brotherly combination in a gymnasium setting. Chants every set, and an uproar of cheers from players on the floor and on the bench. The energy brought into that gym is truly remarkable, and for me personally, did a great job of sucking my interests right into the game.
Now if you are going to the West Volleyball games with the idea of being able to have a nice relaxing sit-down conversation with your friends, I would say that you might want to go somewhere else. But if you go with the intention of watching an interesting game, lots of action, and seeing your peers and friends succeed and compete with a smile on their face and good spirits, then be sure to check out the CB West Men’s Volleyball squads first home game Saturday March 15th.

Well done Dylan! As a side note, volleyball was my sport in High School.
