Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak’s collaborative album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, is a retro-futuristic soul album. It was released on November 12, 2021. The project is a homage to the grooves of the 1970s, obvious from even the cover itself. From its instrumentation to its smooth lyrics, the album is like a time machine, transporting listeners to an era defined by irresistible funk rhythms.
A Nostalgic Sound with Some of That Modern Flair
Right from the opening track, “Silk Sonic Intro,” Mars and Anderson establish the tone of the album. Bootsy Collins acts as the narrator, his commentary bridging tracks, which creates the illusion of a live show.
Thee most popular single, “Leave the Door Open,” has clever and tender lyrics, and an electric groove. Mars and Anderson’s vocal chemistry really excels in this piece.
“Fly as Me” shifts gears with more of a funkier, bass-driven sound. Anderson, Paak takes the lead, delivering confident and humorous lyrics about self-awareness and style. The track’s rhythms and blaring horns call back to the 70’s, but the playful energy keeps it feeling modern.
Highlights of Groove and Emotion
“After Last Night” is one of the album’s standout tracks. The song features Thundercat, who gives the song it’s a slow jam mood. Mars and Anderson’s raspy delivery create a perfect contrast to intrigue the listener. The song has subtle guitar riffs with a rich bassline, making the song one of the most instrumentally diverse songs on An Evening with Silk Sonic.
“Smoking Out the Window” is my personal favorite, blending humor and heartbreak. The song’s lyrics tell the story of a man going crazy lengths for an unfaithful lover. Mars and Anderson’s performances elevate the track, striking the perfect balance between comedy and seriousness.
The upbeat “Skate” is a joyful celebration of movement and rhythm. With its contagious groove and catchy hook, the track feels like a love letter to 70’s disco. The string arrangements are striking, showcasing the thorough attention to detail that defines the album.
